“He had six feet of water," said Steve Johnson.
Video from Johnson showed the devastation left behind from last month's deadly floods in Kentucky.
“You’re looking around at a house [where] everything inside has been turned upside-down," he shared. "You had four feet of water in it; you’ve lost photo albums, possessions, and your bed’s soaked. Everything’s awful, and it’s just this feeling of hopelessness.”
Johnson, now back home, spent five days with the Churches of Christ Disaster Response Team, helping to restore hope to those who needed it most.
“Pretty much everything below that waterline is ruined," he said. “You're pulling out refrigerators and freezers and dishwashers and washers and dryers.”
It's tiring work, but as Johnson said, it is the most rewarding.
“They’re like, ‘Hey, you guys don’t know how much we appreciate this. We were just feeling kind of hopeless and we didn’t know where we were going to go next,'" he recalled. “You also walk away with just a feeling of joy that you could help them a little bit.”
