Aizawl: A total 41,355 refugees and internally displaced people (IDP) are taking shelter in Mizoram from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur, state home minister K Sapdanga informed the legislative assembly on Wednesday night.
While winding up budget demands, Sapdanga said at present, there are 33,505 refugees from Myanmar, 5,633 IDPs from Manipur and 2,217 refugees from Bangladesh taking shelter in the state because of political turmoil in Myanmar and Bangladesh as well as ethnic strife in neighbouring state of Manipur.
He said a high-level committee on indigenous displaced people was constituted and the committee is responsible for looking after the IDPs and refugees taking refuge in Mizoram.
Sapdanga said the last round of minister-level talks to find amicable solution to the long-standing border dispute between Mizoram and Assam was held in Aizawl on Aug 9 last year and it is proposed to hold official level talks during April. "As suggested by the members of the assembly, wider consultation on the border dispute will be organised," he said.
He also said the state govt is sincerely making arrangements for establishment of the state human rights commission. Notifications for constitution state level police accountability commission and district level police accountability commission have been issued, he said, adding that as demanded by the national human rights commission and the new criminal laws, steps are being taken to set up a separate directorate of prosecution in the state.
